collage with a female slant; i.e using feminine materials, lace, buttons, fabric choices, or pictures that like collage, the whole is made up of several parts but which in femmage have a distinctive feminine quality.
Miriam Schapiro valued women’s quilting, needlework & embroidery. She put pieces of these together into large art pieces she named femmages
